A new low-cost 120mm roll-controlled guided mortar (RCGM) for the US Army has been successfully demonstrated by General Dynamics at the army’s Yuma Proving Grounds.

The RCGM reduces costs and risks by using standard 120mm M934A1 mortar round components, including the warhead and fusing elements.

The new mortar is based on an upgraded version of the M934A1 and has undergone several key enhancements to evolve into a precision mortar, while using existing warheads to maximise its lethality.

Enhancements include a adapted M934A1 standard fuse, which features an integrated fuse-and-global-positioning-system (GPS) guidance, navigation and control (GNC) subassembly.

The GNC subassembly also contains a GPS receiver with a low-cost control system called the roll-controlled fixed canard (RCFC) system that allows the mortar to adjust its flight to reach the intended target.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems developed the RCGM to meet the army’s immediate guided mortar requirements and to enhance its operational capability in the future.
