The US Army has awarded a $48.7m contract to L-3 Communications to provide its laser marksmanship training system (LMTS), a system that supports the army’s marksmanship training strategy.

LMTS is a multipurpose, modular, scalable, small arms, individual and unit marksmanship sustainment simulator that provides preliminary marksmanship (PMI), advanced marksmanship and remedial training capabilities.

The system accommodates numerous weapons and calibres and allows combat units to conduct individual and sustainment marksmanship training using nuclear, biological and chemical equipment.

The initial funding for the first delivery order is $15.5m while the contract has one base year and four option years.

The contract has been awarded by the US Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation.
