The US Army has awarded a contract to technology solutions company QinetiQ to develop and deliver PyTEC, a containerised Pyrolysis waste disposal system.

The PyTEC system, can dispose of up to 100kg of municipal solid waste (MSW) an hour and regenerates up to 500kW an hour of the thermal energy from the waste, which will be then be used for electricity generation.

QinetiQ PyTEC solution business development manager Pat McGlead said the system reduces the need for outside contractors to access the secure base camp to dispose of solid waste.

The system in turn provides the army commanders the flexibility to operate in terrain and pro-actively manage their environmental impact without depending on local contractors.

The self-sustaining thermal pyrolysis process also reduces the amount of fuel needed to support the base camp and improves cost savings by reducing the number of trucks on the road and freeing logistics assets for more critical mission requirements.

QinetiQ has been awarded a three-year £1.5m for the system, which is currently in the design, demonstration and testing phase. Pending an army trial period, the system is expected to be delivered by mid-2010, continuing to early 2012.
