The US Army has awarded a $408.5m contract to Oshkosh Corporation for the delivery of 923 MRAP (mine-resistant ambush-protected) all-terrain vehicles (M-ATVs).

The Oshkosh M-ATV features TAK-4 independent suspension system with battle-tested technology derived from the medium tactical vehicle replacement (MTVR) platform.

The system provides superior mobility including a 70% off-road profile capability.

Oshkosh Corporation chairman and chief executive officer Robert G Bohn said that the company would ramp up production to 1,000 vehicles a month in December 2009 and continue through at least March 2010.

We will continue to make the vehicle’s high-quantity production our top priority to ensure our men and women are well protected and their missions remain on the move in even the harshest environments,” he said.

The vehicles are expected to be deployed to soldiers and marines serving in Afghanistan.

Oshkosh has provided an advanced armour solution for the M-ATV in cooperation with Plasan North America, which developed the armour system used on more than 5,000 legacy MRAPs and thousands of Oshkosh MTVR armoured cabs.
