Taiwan will receive new production systems for the combat-proven Patriot Air and Missile Defence System from Raytheon under a $1.1bn foreign military sale from the US.

The new systems will provide a complete technology refresh, obsolescence mitigation, improved man-machine interface and reduced lifecycle costs.

The new systems will also enhance the Patriot’s technologies, increase its affordability and allow future upgrades to continually improve air and missile defence capabilities.

As part of the contract, $965.6m will be spent to provide ground-system hardware while $134.4m will be spent to ensure system performance.

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems Patriot Programs vice-president Skip Garrett said the additional and upgraded Patriot systems will provide Taiwan with advanced technologies and improved capabilities to meet current and emerging air and missile threats.

Work will be carried out at the Integrated Air Defense Center in Andover, Massachusetts, as well as in Texas and Alabama.
