The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) and related equipment to Finland.  

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified the US Congress of the $535m FMS.

The Finnish Government seeks to procure either 150 M30A1 GMLRS Alternative Warhead (AW) Steel Case or M30A2 GMLRS AW Missile Pods with an insensitive munitions propulsion system, or a combination of both.

The government also plans to buy 250 M31A1 GMLRS Unitary (GMLRS-U) Warhead or M31A2 GMLRS-U IMPS, or a combination of both.

Quality assurance team support, transportation services, logistics support, and other related elements are also part of the procurement plan.

The State Department is yet to make a decision on the diversion of 50% of the procurement from US inventory.

Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control will serve as the principal contractor.

The proposed sale will not need the assignment of additional representatives from the US Government or the contractor agency to Finland.

The latest approval is expected to support Finland in enhancing land and air defence capabilities in Europe’s northern flank.

The procurement will also help the nation build its equipment stock, enabling effective defence and deterrence amid rising security concerns.

In a statement, the DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a trusted partner, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”     

Earlier this year, the Finnish Defence Forces entered an agreement with Patria to purchase pre-series Patria 6×6 vehicles.
