Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said: “Since their arrival, the Bushmasters have been used extensively by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with more requested by the Ukrainian President, Minister for Defence, and the Ambassador.

“Military assistance has been the centrepiece of Australia’s support to Ukraine, with $306.71m (A$475m) provided, to assist in what is clearly a protracted conflict.”

As part of global efforts to strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Australia and its allies will offer the necessary training to the troops.

In this regard, a contingent of nearly 70 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel will commence training under UK-led Operation Interflex from January next year.

The ADF troops will focus on making the Ukrainian troops battle-ready.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “Australia has been unequivocal in its bipartisan support for Ukraine and its condemnation of President Putin.

“We will continue to stand up for freedom and democracy. This is not just about Ukraine’s sovereignty; the brave people of Ukraine are defending international law, rules, and norms.”

So far, Australia has pledged over $422.94m (A$655m) in security assistance to Ukraine.

Earlier this year, Australia shipped the first four of 14 M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to Ukraine to strengthen its defence capabilities.

The APCs were part of the Australian Government’s A$285m ($197.62m) worth of military aid for the nation.
