Boeing has received an order to provide two additional CH-47F Block II Chinook multi-mission helicopters to the US Army.

The latest contract has been awarded as part of the US Army’s efforts to continue the modernisation of its CH-47 heavy-lift helicopter fleet.

According to a US Department of Defense’s (DoD) announcement, the Lot 2 order has an estimated value of $63.033m.

Work is expected to be complete by 3 November 2024. The US Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama is serving as the contracting activity.

The Lot 1 contract was awarded to Boeing in 2021. This $136m contract included the delivery of four CH-47F Block II helicopters to the US Army.

The latest Lot 2 contract brings the total number of helicopters ordered by the US Army to six.

A separate $29m Lot 3 advance procurement contract has also been awarded.

Boeing vice-president and H-47 programme manager Ken Eland said: “CH-47F Block II improves readiness, limits future sustainment costs, and provides commonality across the fleet.

“We’re dedicated to making CH-47F Block II the best option for Army’s heavy-lift mission, now and well into the future.”

The Block II helicopters feature a strengthened fuselage, redesigned fuel tanks, and an enhanced drivetrain.

The Chinook programme is relied on by the US Army and 19 other nations.
