The US Department of Defence is to close 22 army bases in Germany, and reduce troop numbers in Mannheim and Heidelberg by 2015.
As part of the move, the US Army has launched a three-phase plan for further consolidation of its bases in Germany, and the reduction of troops in Mannheim and Heidelberg by around 1,500.

These structural changes in Europe will consolidate the remaining personnel with other DoD main operating bases and return surplus facilities to the US.
The first phase of the plan will reduce the soldier population in the Mannheim area by half, with the entire force to vacate the region by mid 2012.
The military bases scheduled for closures include US Army Garrison Mannheim, US Army Garrison Heidelberg and Giessen General Depot.
