German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall has won a contract to deliver air defence systems to an international customer.

Details about the customer and number of defence systems to be supplied have not been disclosed.

As part of the order, Rheinmetall will supply Oerlikon Skyguard 3 with GDF009 twin guns, airburst-capable AHEAD ammunition, spare parts, and further ammunition.

The Oerlikon Skyguard 3 Air Defence System is the third generation of the Skyguard product line.

Equipped with two 35mm Oerlikon Twin Gun GDF009, it provides a high rate of fire of up to 1,100 rounds per minute.

The high-mobility air defence system is easy to deploy and operate.

The system is used to safeguard stationary assets including airfields, bridges, industrial installations, and command and control centres.

According to the company, the deliveries are worth over €65m and will be completed in 2024.

The AHEAD ammunition, also produced by Rheinmetall, provides good saturation resistance due to the large number of ready-to-fire ammunition rounds.

The latest order strengthens Rheinmetall’s customer relations and highlights its expertise in producing ground-based air defence solutions, the company said in a statement.

Rheinmetall has been delivering advanced fire control technology, automatic cannons, integrated guided missile launchers, and air surveillance systems, among others, to customers globally.

In the first three months of 2022, Rheinmetall’s weapon and ammunition division saw a 17% increase in quarterly sales, to €258m, while its vehicle systems division reported sales of €400m, down by 2.2% from the previous year.

The Germany-based company reported consolidated sales of €1.266bn in the first quarter of this year.
