The US Army has awarded a contract to General Dynamics (GD) for the production and field support of joint biological point detection systems (JBPDS).

The JBPDS is a self-contained instrument suite capable of quick detection and identification of biological warfare agents.

The instrument is available in portable, shelter-based, ship-based and trailer-mounted variants, and can be configured to meet the operational requirements of the US Army and Navy.

Under the $30m contract, production of the JBPDS units is scheduled to begin in April 2011 and work will be carried out at the company’s facility in the US.

The six-year, indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract has a potential value of up to $300m if all options are exercised.

GD has been supporting the army’s JBPDS programme since 2001 and has delivered over 700 units to date.
