The US Army Pacific (USARPAC) and Royal Brunei Land Forces (RBLF) have begun the second iteration of the Pahlawan Warrior military exercise at Lumut Camp, Brunei.

A combined opening ceremony of the latest edition was held on 13 June.

A bilateral army-to-army exercise, the Pahlawan Warrior is aimed at strengthening land force capabilities, addressing challenges to internal security, and boosting interoperability operations.  

During the exercise, soldiers attached to the 3rd Cavalry, 4th Squadron, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th ID, along with RBLF personnel will undergo training on improving jungle skills, military operations in urban spaces and live-firing.

The personnel will also share expertise in their fields of study.

At the opening ceremony, 25th Infantry Division’s deputy commanding general of interoperability colonel Michael A van Welie said, “Pahlawan Warrior is a feature in our security cooperation calendar and critical to enhancing our joint capability as we each strive to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

Royal Brunei Land Forces chief of staff and lieutenant colonel Haji Mohammad Shannonnizam bin Sulaiman said: “Exercises like this can inspire confidence and help maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region. I am very confident that Pahlawan Warrior 2022 will be able to achieve its objective.”

In August 2018, the US Army and RBLF soldiers participated in the first Pahlawan Warrior exercise.

A total of 33 US active and National Guard soldiers teamed up with soldiers from the Royal Brunei Land Forces for the Pahlawan Warrior exercise in three locations across Brunei.

Pahlawan Warrior is a part of Pacific Pathways 18-2.

Pacific Pathways 18-2 is implemented by the Indiana Army National Guard and features six exercises: Hamel with Australia, Keris Strike with Malaysia, Garuda Shield with Indonesia, Hanuman Guardian with Thailand, Pahlawan Warrior with Brunei, and Orient Shield with Japan.
