Canada has received the first 20 modernised Leopard 2 A4M tanks from Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH for deployment in Afghanistan.

The new Leopard design will focus on consistent protection of crews from attacks such as powerful anti-tank projectiles, mines and improvised explosive devices.

The battle tank’s capabilities were further extended by integrating a pioneer equipment interface that includes mine rollers, mine plows and dozer blades to perform a wide range of dangerous tasks.

The modernised Leopard 2 A4M was designed for use in the northern Hindu Kush area, however, provisions are also provided for use in the extreme heat of southern Afghanistan.

Canada commissioned KMW to upgrade 20 Leopard main battle tanks in July 2009, according to United Press International.
