The United Arab Emirates has planned to upgrade and integrate its missile systems with other Gulf Arab states to boost its defences.

The six Gulf states are worried about potential strikes by Iran in the event of the leaked US diplomatic cables, according to Reuters.

UAE Armed Forces deputy chief of staff major-general Mohammed Suhaih al Kaabi said three dozen countries possess ballistic missiles, half of whom were in Asia or the Middle East.

“The threat of attack of long-range ballistic missiles is real. We must be prepared to defend our people, nation and region against any threat,” he said.

The UAE will equip itself with the latest missile systems and is also building a sophisticated missile defence system.

The country is procuring and upgrading its Patriot missiles and theatre ballistic missile weaponry.
