The joint theatre missile defence drills were halted in August 2008 due to Russia’s involvement in a five-day war with Georgia.

During a Nato-Russia Council summit in November 2010, Nato officially invited Russia to resume the exercises and to cooperate with the construction of a European missile defence system.

Both parties are also planning to conduct Bold Monarch military exercises in the Mediterranean Sea, according to RIA Novosti.
