Rheinmetall has secured a contract from Bundeswehr, Germany’s unified armed forces, to upgrade its 120mm mortar systems.

Under the latest order, the company will also provide 120mm mortar ammunition to the Bundeswehr.

This order, which was booked last year, represents a gross volume of a total of nearly €27m.

The modernisation is to be completed by next year.

It involves adding obturation rings to the mortar tubes, which will enable the Bundeswehr to fire new generation (NG) mortar rounds.

Rheinmetall has already supplied the service with DM75 NG multispectral mortar rounds.

Last year, the company also supplied DM56 NG infrared illumination mortar rounds.

Rheinmetall offers a full range of 120mm, 81mm, and 60mm ammunition families.

The company also produces mortar fire control systems and mortars, such as the 120mm Ragnarök mortar weapon system, and the RSG60 60mm mortar.

The 120mm mortar ammunition shells are fitted with an advanced propelling system, and contain several advanced payloads. It has a range of up to 8km.

Infantry units use direct or indirect fire to respond to threats during combat, reconnaissance, or monitoring missions.

In March last year, the company announced a $103.7m (€88m) contract to supply MELLS anti-tank guided missile system to the German Armed Forces.

The Bundeswehr placed this order with MELLS producer EuroSpike, a joint venture between Rheinmetall and its partners Diehl Defence and Rafael.
