South Korea has reportedly deployed precision-guided surface-to-surface missiles capable of hitting North Korea’s capital Pyongyang.
The deployment of the army tactical missile system (ATACMS) near the tense border has come after the two Koreas exchanged fire near the Yellow Sea maritime border in November 2010, which killed four South Koreans.
ATACMS missiles, with a shooting range of 165km, can be fired from multiple rocket launchers and are capable of detecting targets with a global positioning system and inertial guidance technology.
In 2004 the South Korean Army acquired around 220 ATACMS missiles from the US.
