Since 1995, the US Army has spent $32bn on development, testing and evaluation of 22 weapons programmes that were later cancelled, according to an internal evaluation release.
Bloomberg has reported the study as saying, “Army acquisition has proved ineffective and inefficient as demonstrated by the 22 major programmes terminated since the end of the Cold War.”

The amount that was spent is currently equivalent to a third of the army’s budget for creating new weapons.
The army has spent more than $1bn every year on doomed programmes out of a total of $98bn spent on creating new weapons since 1995.
The major army programme contributing to the total was the manned vehicle portion of Boeing’s future combat systems, on which $19bn was spent before it was cancelled in April 2009.
