India and France have begun the SHAKTI-2011 joint army exercise to enhance various combat skills and promote mutual understanding and interoperability between the two armies.
The 15-day exercise is the first ever joint training between the two armies and is focused on practising basic combat tactics related to counter-terrorism operations, as well as the exchange of combat techniques.

Sixty troops from the French 13 Mountain Battalion will participate in the exercise alongside 2 Indian BIHAR Regiment under the aegis of 99 Mountain Brigade.
The exercise will also include a series of counter-terrorist operations including mountain techniques and employment of commandoes in the thick forests.
