Russia has developed a new mobile radar, the 55Zh6ME, which is capable of detecting long-range targets, a Nizhniy Novgorod Research Institute of Radio Engineering (NNIIRT) spokesman has revealed.

RIA Novosti quoted the spokesman as saying, "The radar has been developed for the Russian Armed Forces, especially for aerospace defences."

The new radar is capable of detecting targets at a distance of up to 1,800km and an altitude of up to 1,200km.

The first batch of the new radars will be delivered to the Russian military in the near future.

The nation is planning to set up a unified strategic aerospace defence command that will integrate existing air defence and missile defence networks, early warning systems and aerospace monitoring systems.
