General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada has been awarded a C$1.06bn ($1.05bn) contract to upgrade the Canadian Army’s fleet of 550 LAV III combat vehicles.
Under the contract, the company will incorporate an upgrade package into the vehicles that will enhance survivability, mobility and firepower, while also extending the fleet’s life cycle to 2035.

The upgrades include double-V-hull technology, add-on armour protection and energy-attenuating seats to protect crew members against mine blasts, IEDs and other threats.
The addition of a powerful engine, robust driveline and suspension, and a height management system (HMS) will optimise the vehicle’s automotive performance, handling characteristics and payload capacity.
The 25mm turret’s crew will be provided with improved fire control, thermal, day and low-light sights, and data displays.
Work will be carried out at the company’s facilities in London, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta, as well as the company’s Canadian supplier network, and is expected to be completed in 2017.
