The Afghan National Security Force (ANSF) will receive 145 multi-type planes and 21 helicopters from Nato, Training Mission-Afghanistan commander lieutenant general William Caldwell has confirmed.

The Frontier Post has quoted Caldwell as saying that the 21 new US helicopters, valued at $380m, will be handed over to Afghan forces next year.

The assistance comes after the defence ministry revealed that the Afghan National Army (ANA) lacked aircraft and heavy weaponry.

Nato is also training Afghan forces to independently defend their nation after the withdrawal of coalition forces in 2014.

The ANA has 56 types of weapons, 140 types of vehicles and two types of aircraft, while the air force has plans to procure an additional 100 aircraft from the coalition forces.
