DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies has awarded a contract to Rheinmetall Nordic for the supply of the Vingtaqs II long-range surveillance and reconnaissance system to the Malaysian Army.

The €36m ($49.6m) contract involves the supply of the Vingtaqs II, systems integration, training and documentation.

The surveillance system will be installed into the AV8 armoured vehicles that the army is procuring from Turkish company FNSS.

The VINGTAQS II system is used to accurately determine target coordinates at long range from the vehicle forward observer position.

The system is equipped with ground surveillance radar to laser-designate targets to support the forward air controller (FAC).

FNSS will start deliveries of the vehicles from 2014.
