Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract by the US Army for expanded operations of Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) sense-and-warn systems in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The $124m award consists of two parts, of which $76m is the first-year option of the task order awarded in 2010, and $48m is for expanded C-RAM sense-and-warn operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The C-RAM system has been designed to use sensor, command and control (C2) and visualisation tools to provide the soldier with early warning of incoming indirect fire.

The system has recently been fielded to protect troops serving Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
