India has successfully tested its Agni-IV indigenous nuclear-capable advanced surface-to-surface ballistic missile from Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast, India.

The missile was fired from a road mobile launcher and hit the pre-designated target in the Bay of Bengal, meeting all desired mission objectives.

The two-stage, 20m-long, 17t Agni-IV carries a payload of 800kg and has a range of 3,000km.

The missile has been equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including indigenously developed ring laser gryo and composite rocket motor.

The Hindu reported V.K. Saraswat, scientific advisor to the defence minister, as saying that the launch demonstrated and confirmed the capability of the country in strategic defence.

India is also planning to test launch Agni-V by the end of the year.
