Raytheon has introduced the first hybrid cellular capability for soldier networks during the US Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment (AEWE) held at Fort Benning, Georgia, US.

The military tactical radios and 3G enable simultaneous transmission of data, voice and video over commercial hand-held devices without any interruptions in service for the soldiers.

Raytheon Network Centric Systems’ Integrated Communications Systems vice-president Scott Whatmough said: "We provided an on-the-move, hybrid cellular-military network that allowed soldiers to accomplish their missions in a very tough environment."

Raytheon’s high-speed mobile ad-hoc interoperable network, GATEway (MAINGATE), works as a bridge to allow soldiers to communicate, even when separated by trees and other obstacles.

The US Army Training and Doctrine Command’s AEWE initiative is a live, soldier-focused, network-enabled event to test and evaluate emerging and existing technologies.
