The $138.7m order is the third of four annual options to the base contract secured by the company in 2009, which brings the total contract value to $803m.

Under the new contract, the company will continue to provide systems analysis, software and hardware engineering, testing and logistics support.

Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business Integrated Air and Missile Defense vice president Sanjay Kapoor said the ongoing sustainment through engineering services ensures the Patriot systems to remain at high levels of readiness.

The Patriot is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system designed to provide protection against advanced threats including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The missile features a solid propellant rocket motor, aerodynamic controls, attitude control motors (ACMs) and inertial guidance for navigation.

The missile is equipped with a track-via-missile (TVM) guidance system that helps transmit target data through the ground radar to the engagement control station for final course correction calculations.

The target engagement can be carried out in manual, semi-automatic or automatic mode and the missile is acquired by a trailer-mounted AN/MPQ-53 phased array radar that carries out search, detection and missile-tracking functions after the launch.

Currently, Patriot is in service with 12 nations worldwide including the US, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Netherlands and Saudi Arabia.

Manufacturing work under the contract will be carried out by Raytheon at the Integrated Air Defense Center, Massachusetts, the Warfighter Protection Center, Alabama, and at the Mission Capability Verification Center, New Mexico, US.

Raytheon IDS is the prime contractor for Patriot air and missile defence systems and is also the system integrator for Patriot advanced capability-3 (PAC-3) missiles.
