US Army soldiers from A Battery, 1st Battalion, 17th Field Artillery (A/1-17th FA) unit have successfully completed M109A6 Paladin 155mm self-propelled howitzer’s battalion level certification and live-fire exercise at Fort Sill in Oklahoma.
Conducted in July 2012, the two-week Paladin certification featured three phases; Paladin Table I-IV, which takes place in a military base, Paladin Table V, involving dry fire missions in the motorpool and Paladin Table VI, representing live fire missions.

The gunner sections from 1-17th FA underwent artillery skill tests, gunners’ tests and the gunners’ written tests to complete the certification process, while the fire direction centre (FDCs) also completed similar testing live round firing certification.
During the evaluations, FDC soldiers had to score a minimum of 90% to complete a manual safety test, where all sections were validated based on their ability to meet fire mission processing times, without recording any safety incidents and adhering to the battalion’s standard operation.
The Paladin gun section received processed fire mission data from the FDC, which it obtained through the observer, battalion FDC and the battery FDC route.
A/1-17th FA gunner private first class Evan Warnken said: "You can do all the dry fire training in the motorpool you want but coming out to the field helps you build up the confidence that you can do your job."
