The US State Department has approved a possible foreign military sale (FMS) of the Patriot missile system and associated equipment to Switzerland.

Following the determination, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified the US Congress of this potential sale.

The step comes after the Government of Switzerland placed a request to buy five Patriot Configuration-3+ Modernized Fire Units.

This will include five AN/MPQ-65 Radar Sets, five AN/MSQ-132 Engagement Control Stations, 17 M903 Launching Stations, up to 70 Patriot MIM-104E Guidance Enhanced Missile Tactical (GEM-T) Missiles, seven Antenna Mast Groups, five Electrical Power Plants (EPP) III, as well as six Multifunctional Information Distribution System Low Volume Terminal (MIDS-LVT) (11) Block Upgrade Two (BU2).

If approved, the package will also include the delivery of communications, ancillary support, tools and test equipment, as well as range and test programmes.

Additionally, it will include the supply of spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, training equipment, in addition to training and associated services.

Raytheon and Lockheed-Martin will be the prime contractors for this programme, which is expected to be valued at around $2.2bn.

The induction of the Patriot missile system is expected to enhance Switzerland’s missile defence capability and contribute to regional stability.

In a statement, Defense Security Cooperation Agency said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to improve the security of a friendly European nation, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress within Europe.”
