It involves the integration of a directed energy weapon system on a Stryker vehicle.

The US Army’s future M-SHORAD aims to protect frontline combat units and forward-deployed soldiers by using laser weapon systems.

It will provide counter kinetic capabilities against aerial threats, rockets, artillery, mortars and unmanned aircraft systems.

The prototyping initiative is managed by the US Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO), Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.

Under the contract, ATA will build an upgraded suite of advanced electro-optical infrared sensors, target acquisition and tracking system.

It will further provide the required controls on an Army Stryker combat vehicle.

The first version of ITATS was delivered to Kord Technologies. It was integrated on the army’s existing laser weapon Stryker platform last year.

ATA vice-president Larry Lloyd said: “ATA is excited to be a part of the DE-MSHORAD vision for laser weapon systems and is eager to leverage our precision pointing and tracking capabilities that have matured through supporting laser weapon programmes.

“Our corporate focus is delivering mature, high-performance products like ITATS to accelerate delivery of next-generation protection to our military forces.”

In August 2019, RCCTO selected Kord Technologies as prime contractor to lead the initiative.

In October last year, General Dynamics Land Systems unveiled the new Stryker A1 Medium Calibre Weapon System variant at the Association of the US Army’s (AUSA) Annual Meeting & Exposition.
