The US Army has awarded a contract to Raytheon to commence production of Patriot air and missile defence system for the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Awarded in January this year, the contract is valued at $551m.

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems business Integrated Air and Missile Defense vice-president Tom Laliberty said: “Raytheon’s Patriot provides the Kingdom of Bahrain and 16 other countries around the globe with a combat-proven system that protects citizens, infrastructure and armed forces from a broad spectrum of threats.

“Patriot works, has saved countless lives, and will continue to do so for many years because the system is constantly tested, modernised, upgraded and improved to stay ahead of the advancing threat.”

The company’s Patriot defence system is considered to be part of an advanced portfolio of air and missile defence technologies available globally.

It provides full protection against advanced threats, including aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and cruise missiles.

Raytheon’s 17 Patriot nations also include the US, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Taiwan, Greece, Republic of Korea, the UAE, Qatar, Spain, Romania, Poland and Sweden.

Last month, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems secured a task order valued $314m for the Patriot Integrated Air and Missile Defense System. The task order was awarded by the US Army and is funded by the 17 nations that depend on the missile defence system.

In the same month, Raytheon built the first radar antenna array for the US Army’s next-generation radar Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS).
