Lockheed Martin has received a $492m contract from the US Army Contracting Command to produce and deliver high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) launchers and associated hardware.

The launchers and hardware are intended for delivery to the US Army, US Marine Corps, Romania and Poland.

The contract represents the first acquisition of HIMARS launchers by Poland.

Lockheed Martin will produce the HIMARS vehicles from the ground up at its Precision Fires Center of Excellence in Camden, Arkansas, US, for delivery by 2022.

According to the company, the launchers have achieved more than 1.4 million operating hours.

The precision lightweight mobile launcher can be transported by C-130 aircraft for rapid deployment.

It is designed to fire six Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets or one Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles.

The HIMARS wheeled launcher features a launcher loader module and fire control system mounted on a 5t truck chassis.

In addition, the system comprises a specialised armoured cab to provide enhanced protection for crew members.

Romania requested the US Government for the supply of 54 HIMARS launchers in August 2017.

In August last year, Lockheed Martin won a $218m contract for the production of 18 HIMARS launchers for an unidentified international customer.

Another contract was awarded in September for 24 HIMARS launchers and related equipment.
