The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) has been awarded $10m in funding by the US Department of Defense (DoD).
Through the funding, the strategic partnership between the DoD and DMDII will continue with an aim to reform the department to deliver superior performance and affordability in support of the National Defense Strategy.

DMDII is the US’s flagship research institute that was established in partnership with UI LABS and the DoD in 2014.
Technology & Manufacturing Industrial Base director Robert Gold said: “The Department of Defense wants to reaffirm our strategic relationship with the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute.
“We are working together to develop cutting-edge digital technology and investing in a robust research and development infrastructure to promote global competitiveness on the part of US manufacturers.”
The award comes with an option of an additional $20m in funding over the next five years, which will be used to advance the digital future of manufacturing.

By GlobalDataIt is part of a new multi-year follow-on agreement that has a maximum government funding limit of $60m.
Pentagon DoD Manufacturing Institutes and Manufacturing Technology programme director Tracy Frost said: “American manufacturing must remain competitive since it underpins national and economic security.”
To date, approximately $94m has been invested by DMII in more than 60 applied research projects across the country.
DMDII and the government-owned weapons manufacturer US Army’s Rock Island Arsenal have partnered to explore the use of 3D modelling in its manufacturing processes.
