South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff (JCS) have claimed that North Korea has test-launched missiles near the east coast peninsula for the third time this month, heightening tensions in the region.

The JCS claimed North Korea had fired five short-range missiles from an area south of Hamhung city, South Hamgyong province.

The missiles flew roughly 200km before falling in waters east of North Korea.

Earlier this month, North Korea test-fired two short-range missiles from the central province of North Hwanghae, which borders South Korea.

On 17 March, North Korea tested two medium-range missiles from Sukchon County near the South Pyongan province, bordering South Korea, in response to a UN resolution imposing sanctions on the South Asian nation.
