"New tactical communications equipment will help Lithuanian military secure interoperability with its allies while delivering on common tasks."

US permanent representative to Nato Ambassador Douglas Lute said: "Lithuania’s decision to strengthen their land force and ground-to-air communications is an example of delivering on their national responsibility for self-defence, embedded in Article 3 of the Nato Treaty.

"The use of ERI funds to help secure the radio equipment demonstrates the continued commitment of the US to helping strengthen our Allies’ ability to address new and emerging threats along Nato’s borders."

The European nation will receive its next batch of equipment under the ERI in late 2016.

The shipment will include surveillance equipment and systems for tactical and satellite communications, as well as battlefield management.

Valued at $33m, the batch is expected to be delivered to Lithuania in several stages.
