The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has taken delivery of 10,000 personal radiation detectors (D3S) from Kromek, under a contract awarded in February.

D3S detectors have been delivered to support DARPA’s SIGMA programme, which aims to prevent attacks involving radiological 'dirty bombs' and other nuclear threats worldwide.

The programme has successfully developed and demonstrated Kromek’s D3S network, which can detect the tiniest traces of radioactive materials.

“As we announced earlier in the week, it is also pleasing to know that our success in the SIGMA programme has resulted in Kromek being awarded a contract by a different US defence agency to produce a ruggedised handheld radiation detection device to be used for military applications in the US and globally.”

Earlier this year, DARPA successfully demonstrated the bomb detectors at a transportation hub managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Over the course of a month, the system significantly increased the hub's ability to identify sources of radiation compared to currently installed systems, Kromek said in a statement.

SIGMA has also been refining algorithms to improve the radiation-sensing technology in its devices.
