exactEarth has won a contract from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) to provide AIS data processing services for the Canadian Department of National Defence's (DND) Polar Epsilon 2 (PE2) project.

MDA previously secured a $48.5m contract from the Government of Canada to deliver the PE2 system.

By combining radar and AIS data from the Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM), the PE2 project provides improved maritime domain awareness that will identify, detect and also track vessels in real-time.

"Our industry-leading satellite AIS data processing detection technology has once again been recognised for its performance."

Furthermore, the project will support the Canadian Armed Forces at home and abroad.

Under the terms of the four-year, $2.7m contract, exactEarth will provide services to establish, test and validate the AIS processing service in accordance with the requirements of PE2 project.

The PE2 project is part of the Canadian Government's effort to expand the country's access to a domestic source of space-based earth observation data.

The DND said that the project will use imagery from the three-satellite RCM to deliver surveillance capabilities for the  domestic and global operations of the Canadian Armed Forces.

PE2 will allow the armed forces to identify and track vessels from space in near-real-time.

The RCM satellites are set to be launched in 2018.
