The US Army is set to start tests on the armoured multi-purpose vehicle (AMPV) with updated platforms.

The army will receive first AMPV from BAE Systems in York, Pennsylvania, on 15 December.

At least 29 of the vehicles will be manufactured in a 52-month engineering and manufacturing development phase of the procurement process, according to a statement posted on the army's website.

"If the low-rate production of AMPV is approved, several hundred of the vehicles will be manufactured for testing over the next four years."

Designed to replace the armoured brigade combat team's M113 family of vehicles, the AMPV is fitted with an improved power train, and features a new hull and space to accommodate new systems in the future.

The army has also conceptualised a new suite of mobile-protected firepower (MPF) vehicles to cater to the requirements of infantry brigade combat teams.
