The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has appointed Vencore Labs to protect its wireless networks against malicious attacks.

The $3.4m contract requires the company to support Phase III of DARPA's Wireless Network Defense (WND) programme.

The third and final phase of the programme involves evaluation of the new network technologies developed during the initial phases.

The new technologies developed will be tested on military radios to demonstrate their effectiveness.

Vencore Labs president Petros Mouchtaris said: "Protecting wireless networks against attacks so that critical information can be properly, securely and effectively routed is a complex problem that requires a deep understanding of the functioning of wireless protocols.

Under the contract, Vencore will provide DARPA with a wireless defence framework that is robust in the face of attacks, has a very high accuracy rate, and imposes very little overhead on the network.

The company will provide a solution that incorporates existing hardware and equipment, therefore reducing costs.

Vencore Labs' common defensive framework will be applicable to multiple network technologies and able to protect these disparate networks.

Additionally, the company plans to develop techniques to detect and mitigate the impact of attacks on wireless network elements.
