The US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded two contracts, worth approximately $20m, to US-based Shared Spectrum Company subsidiary SSC Innovations to test and integrate the company’s dynamic spectrum access (DSA) technology.

The contracts have been awarded to enable the US Government to share spectrum with government users, cellular carriers as well as news organisations.

SSC founder and president Dr Mark McHenry said: “Spectrum management to date has been largely a manual and time-consuming process that inefficiently allocates these limited resources.

“SSC is taking a new approach; combining sensing intelligence in mobile devices with the more traditional database queries, to significantly accelerate the speed with which spectrum can be managed, enabling multiple users to share the same band.

“Our work on these newest contracts will prove how our solution can address very specific problems, and be the basis for revolutionary changes to spectrum management in the future.”

Valued at $16.8m, the first DoD contract aims to enhance military communications performance in the field.

Under the contract, the Spectrum Agile Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW) Through Innovative Protocols (SAWTIP) proposal intends to use the company’s DSA solution to optimise WNW performance in complex radio frequency environments.

The two parties have been collaborating on DSA software for about 15 years to meet spectrum challenges faced by the US military.

The DSA software will be integrated into WNW radios used by the US Army to facilitate vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

The WNW radios will use algorithms to manage the spectrum locally, along with using networking planning tools to allocate resources and boost spectrum enforcement.

Under the second contract, SSC will use the DSA solution to enable spectrum sharing between the US DoD and electronic news gathering (ENG) organisations.

Though the project mainly focuses on the US DoD Tactical Targeting Network Technology (TTNT) system, it is also applicable to other DoD systems in the 2025-2210 MHz band, which includes small unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) and high-resolution video systems.
