The US Army has contracted Leidos to provide systems engineering, software development and integration services for its advanced field artillery tactical data system (AFATDS).

Valued at more than $102m, the contract has a three-year base period and one two-year option.

The AFATDS is said to provide critical artillery system command and control capabilities for the US Army and Marine Corps.

The contract requires the company to modernise AFATDS to improve its training and combat functionalities, as well as support a more intuitive user software interface.

Leidos will also enable migration of AFATDS software into the army's Common Operating Environment initiative, which is providing integrated software applications to enhance warfighter capabilities.

As part of a separate contract award worth around $64m, Leidos is responsible for the integration, testing and demonstration of the three complete Airborne Reconnaissance Low-Enhanced (ARL-E) systems.

The ARL-E is a manned multi-intelligent airborne platform that can detect, locate, identify and track surface targets in adverse weather conditions at day or night.

The contract covers integration of the previously delivered Mission Equipment Payload (MEP) onto the DHC-8 aircraft, including testing and delivery of the complete ARL-E system.

Under the option periods, Leidos will integrate the second and third MEP on ARL-E systems 2 and 3.
