Morocco to Purchase American Chinook Helicopters

30 October 2009

Morocco says it will purchase three CH-47D Chinook helicopters from the US under a foreign military sale.

The $134m purchase order for the helicopters also includes six T55-GA-714A turbine engines, two spare T-55-GA-714A turbine engines, four AN/ARC-201E single-channel ground and airborne radio systems, and mission equipment.

Communication and navigation equipment, ground support equipment, spare and repair parts, test equipment and logistical support will also be provided under the proposed sale.

The Royal Moroccan Army will use the acquired helicopters to enhance its combat capability for humanitarian missions.

The primary mission of the Chinook heavy-lift transport helicopter is to move troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield.

The helicopters also take part in other missions including medical evacuation, search and rescue, aircraft recovery, firefighting and parachute drops.
