Iran Begins Work on Shahin Ground-to-Air Missile Defence System

08 June 2009

Tehran has begun the production of its Shahin (hawk) ground-to-air missile defence system, Iran's Fars News Agency reports.

The new supersonic missile defence system being produced in Iran has a range of over 40km, said Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar.

"The range is more than 40km and it is able to pursue and hit enemy airplanes and helicopters on a smart basis and at supersonic speed," said Najjar.

The ground-to-air defence system is expected to help the country defend against potential air strikes by Israel and the US on its nuclear sites, news agencies report.

The US and Israel have accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies. The missile announcement has come less than a week before the 12 June presidential election.
