33 days after publishing a call for innovative ambulance cleaning technology, the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) have trialled novel technology to reduce the time it takes to sanitise ambulances.

Dstl scientists tested 12 approaches, some of which cut sanitising down from one hour to as little as 10 minutes allowing the vehicles to spend longer on the road than in the depot being cleaned.

More than 200 ideas were submitted to the call for innovation. DASA security competition lead Gabriella Cox said: “This has been a huge effort from everyone involved. The response by industry was remarkable and there has been a monumental effort by staff from DASA, Dstl and our partners to be able to complete this project in just 33 days.

“Innovation has never been more important as we play our part in the national effort against Coronavirus.”

Results from the trials will be assessed and may be implemented by the Welsh Ambulance Service.
