Patria AMV28A

Patria AMV28A is a new member of the AMV series of wheeled armoured vehicles produced by Patria, a company based in Finland.

The vehicle is intended to offer an optimal combination of amphibious capability, protection and firepower.

The Patria AMV28A, where 28A stands for 28t amphibious, was unveiled at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference 2017 (IDEX 2017) held in February.

Patria AMV28A amphibious tests

The Patria AMV28A successfully underwent amphibious tests at the Hanko area in southern Finland in May. Two vehicles were evaluated in the trails, of which the first test configuration was loaded with full amphibious weight of 28t, while the second variant carrying lower weight than its gross vehicle weight (GVW) was installed with Kongsberg PROTECTOR MCT-30 turret.

Swimming tests were performed during strong wind conditions with constant wind speed of up to 13m/s and gusts of more than 17m/s. The vehicles met the test objectives without difficulties.

AMV28A design and features

The AMV28A is based on the combat-proven Patria AMV 8×8 armoured vehicle, which is in service with the armed forces of Finland, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Sweden.

The robust hull of the vehicle provides high payload capacity and high level of protection, while allowing for the integration of heavy weapon systems. It is further covered with protective coating to withstand the marine environment.

The AMV28A is manned by a crew of three, including driver, commander and gunner, while the troop compartment can accommodate eight dismounting soldiers. The vehicle is equipped with desert air conditioning system for high comfort in hot and humid conditions.

The bolt-on marine environment amphibious kit fitted to the vehicle allows operation at sea-state 3 conditions. The modular amphibious kit can be easily detached and reinstalled when required. The vehicle measures 2.85m-wide without an amphibious kit.

The AMV28A vehicle can be optionally delivered with Patria AMV part task trainer (PTT) to meet the training requirements of the customers. The PTT offers a virtual battle space-based synthetic environment and driver’s controls and systems.

Armament and self-protection

The Patria AMV28A is installed with Kongsberg PROTECTOR medium-calibre turret (MCT-30) mounting commander’s independent weapon station with a 12.7mm machine gun and a Javelin anti-tank (AT) missile launcher. It offers superior firepower even in amphibious operations.

“The vehicle is intended to offer an optimal combination of amphibious capability, protection and firepower.”

The AMV offers the highest level of ballistic protection in its class. The frontal section of the hull provides protection against armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding-sabot (APFSDS) rounds up to 30mm, while the vehicle offers protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs), explosive formed projectiles (EFPs), as well as TNT mines of up to 10kg. The crew is also protected from modern asymmetric threats.

The vehicle also integrates nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection, as well as a defensive aids system (DAS) and fire suppression system.

Patria AMV28A engine and mobility

The Patria AMV28A is powered by a Scania DI 12 diesel engine coupled to ZF automatic transmission with seven forward gears and one reverse gear.

The all-wheel drive vehicle is equipped with integrated terrain control system (ITCS), central tyre inflation system (CTIS) and hydraulically operated disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS).

The fully independent suspension of the vehicle integrates hydro-pneumatic springs, and a double wishbone on each wheel station. The height of the suspension can be optionally adjusted as required.

An automated amphibious mode allows the vehicle to swim at a maximum speed of 10km/h. The vehicle can attain a maximum road speed of 100km/h and negotiate a gradient of 60% and a side slope of 30%. The vehicle has the capability to cross an obstacle of 0.7m and trench of 2.1m.
