General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) has confirmed the sale of three MQ-9B SkyGuardian remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) systems to the Polish Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The MQ-9B, the latest model in GA-ASI's lineup, will become Poland's primary platform for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.

Alongside the aircraft, the deal includes two Certifiable Ground Control Stations and three years of SkyGuardian Global Support Solutions provided by GA-ASI.

Polish MoD said: “In the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, a contract was concluded for the supply of MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned reconnaissance systems, which will increase the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces in the field of ISR.”

The MQ-9B has extended endurance and range capabilities, featuring automated take-off and landing via SATCOM-only control.

It is equipped to operate in unsegregated airspace, using GA-ASI's Detect and Avoid system.

The SkyGuardian can fly beyond the horizon using satellite communication for more than 40 hours in diverse weather conditions, integrating safely into civil airspace.

This capability allows joint forces and civil authorities to maintain real-time situational awareness globally, around the clock.

The aircraft includes Lynx Multi-mode Radar and an advanced electro-optical/infrared sensor.

It also features automatic take-off and landing capabilities and a wingspan of 79 feet, which is longer than previous models.

SkyGuardian integrates seamlessly with other platforms, systems, and technologies, enhancing its multi-domain mission capabilities.

GA-ASI president David Alexander said: “The purchase of MQ-9B SkyGuardian will deliver persistent multi-domain situational awareness, which is vital to Poland.”

Poland's decision to purchase the MQ-9B follows its successful operation of MQ-9A Reapers under a lease agreement with GA-ASI in 2022.

The MQ-9B's first deliveries began in 2022 to the UK Royal Air Force, with contracts also secured with Belgium, Canada, India, the Japan Coast Guard, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the US Air Force for Special Operations Command.

Additionally, the MQ-9B has participated in several US Navy exercises this year, including Northern Edge, Integrated Battle Problem, and Group Sail.
