The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of 800 AGM-114R2 Hellfire missiles to Australia.
Approved by the US State Department, the proposed sale including associated equipment is estimated to be valued at $108m.

Under the FMS, Australia has also requested to buy Tactical Aviation Ground Munition (TAGM) Program Office Technical Assistance, Security Assistance Management Directorate (SAMD), Joint Attack Munition Systems (JAMS) Technical Assistance, as well as classified and unclassified publications.
The sale package also includes spare parts, repair and return, and other associated programme elements and logistical support.
Furthermore, services such as the US Government and contractor technical, engineering, repair, storage, and logistics personnel services are included in the sale.
According to DSCA, the missile will improve the Australian Army’s capabilities in armed reconnaissance and anti-tank warfare missions. It will also help the service to tackle existing and future threats.

“Australia is one of our most important allies in the Western Pacific. The strategic location of this political and economic power contributes significantly to ensuring peace and economic stability in the region.
“It is vital to the US national interest to assist our ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.”
Lockheed Martin is serving as the principal contractor of the FMS.
The AGM-114 Hellfire II is an air-to-ground missile developed primarily for anti-armour use.
