Around 1,800 British Army troops based in Germany will return to the UK early next year following the confirmation of the first tranche of army unit moves by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The decision to relocate troops in Germany to the UK by 2020 is part of the UK’s Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) 2010.

As part of the Defence Rebasing Programme, troops from Cyprus and those present within the UK will also move into former Royal Air Force (RAF) bases at Cottesmore and Kinloss.

The number of troops in Cyprus, however, remains unchanged as they will be replaced with other infantry battalions.

The army is also replacing its three divisional headquarters with a single headquarters support command under Project Avanti.

Further reductions will depend on the ongoing review being conducted by the British Army under the Future Army Structure (FAS).
