Singapore Technologies Kinetics (ST Kinetics), the land systems arm of Singapore Technologies Engineering (ST Electronics), has been awarded a contract by the Singapore Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to supply its armoured fighting vehicles (AFV).

The new AFV is intended to replace the ageing Ultra M113 AFV, which has been in service with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) since the early 1970s.

ST Kinetics president Ravinder Singh said: “The AFV is an advanced platform which will provide our armoured troops with enhanced protection and firepower.

“It is also a demonstration of our continuous drive to meet the current and future operational requirements of the Singapore Army.”

Developed together with the Defence Science and Technology Agency, the next generation AFV will provide the country's armoured forces with enhanced firepower, protection, mobility and situational awareness, MINDEF stated.

Delivery of the AFVs is expected to begin in 2019.

“The AFV is an advanced platform which will provide our armoured troops with enhanced protection and firepower."

The AFV will be operated alongside the Bionix infantry fighting vehicle to meet the SAF's operational requirements.

The 6.9m-long vehicle can accommodate three crew members and eight dismounted personnel.

It has a range of 500km and it can travel at maximum speed of 70km/h.

The contract also requires ST Kinetics to provide integrated logistics support to MINDEF, which includes spares, training and documentation.

The project to replace Ultra M113 AFV was initiated in 2006, according to MINDEF.
