Russia will upgrade up to 200 T-72 main battle tanks for the Libyan Army as part of a €1.3bn ($1.6bn) military cooperation deal signed earlier this year.

Under the bilateral defence agreement, Russia will deliver an undisclosed number of fighter jets and air-defence systems, according to RIA Novosti.

Both countries have been involved in modernising the T-72 tanks since 2006 in an effort to resume their military technical cooperation.

To date, Libya has purchased more than 2,000 tanks, 2,000 armoured infantry fighting vehicles and armoured personnel carriers, 450 self-propelled artillery pieces, and a number of combat aircraft from Russia.
